The White House has approved “several” nominations to be cabinet positions for Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the White House announced.
The nominations would allow Sessions to bring to an assistant attorney general his longtime friend from Birmingham, Alabama, as the top prosecutor in the Justice Department’s Southern District of Alabama.
Sessions is under intense scrutiny by both Democrats and Republicans over his meeting with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the presidential campaign, an alleged meeting last February with the head of a Russian financial intelligence agency and a disclosure that he failed to say in public what was said at several meetings with Russian officials.
The White House statement says: “For decades, Jeff Sessions has fought for America’s interests. He is an excellent and accomplished attorney general, and will continue to do so.” The statement does not mention the meeting Sessions had with Kislyak.
Sessions, a former U.S. Senator from Alabama, was confirmed in February.
The White House statement says only that Sessions “now serves as the nation’s top law enforcement officer and will continue to play a key role in that role.”
But it did not provide any additional details or indicate what position he is filling, which could open the door for his nomination to get a vote.
Republicans are also calling for the resignation of White House Counsel Don McGahn, who was told of an unusual meeting in May with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
House and Senate committees have launched their own investigations into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
