The bottom line is that no matter how much you teach your child an skill, if they do not develop the skill or learn it at a young age it’s difficult to maintain your current routine as well as teach them new skills. It’s also difficult to make the skills that you want to learn automatic (i.e. it doesn’t take practice, practice doesn’t make it automatic but rather, it’s a learning process in itself). So, the best decision a parent (particularly an older one) can make is to take some time (perhaps 1-2 sessions of practice/skills each week or so) and move their child to a newer skill or to a place where they spend some time doing that particular skill before moving on to the next one.

So, if you ask me, the best way to learn ANY skill that requires physical effort is to find an outlet where you aren’t doing any physical activities. Maybe an exercise room or some other place where you have a safe place to sit. If they aren’t able to play physically they need to learn how to interact with the other family members in the home or on the playground which is probably more of a learning environment than a physical one. I believe that many of the techniques that teach these skills like push-ups and sit-ups are great to build an exercise routine into and then when they move on to the next skill you can introduce them to it.
