It has been known for years that eating more vegetables could reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s, but now a UK study suggests consuming larger quantities of fruits and vegetables might have a similarly favorable effect for those suffering from depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and autism.

The findings are published in the journal Obesity.


“The idea that eating more fruits and vegetables might do something to increase cognitive fitness for these patient groups may have a lot of potential benefits for patients,” said Dr. Stephen B. Hill, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, who led the UK study.

The idea that fruits and vegetables contain nutrients that can help improve cognitive function isn’t new, Bhawna Srinivasan, associate professor of psychiatry at Duke University, who has a study underway examining the effects of a Mediterranean diet containing fruits and vegetables, said in a press statement.

But Hill and colleagues note that in order to find these positive effects, the researchers looked at several different dietary parameters and tried to identify the best, most beneficial ones.
