Once you start piano, it’s easy. Start learning just one thing. Piano is easy. I’ve had my share of learning about piano since birth – I’ve picked it up as a two-year-old, played piano with other children, and then went on to a teacher. I don’t have any idea what it takes to learn something the hard way, but I know that I’ve learned more in that time than I ever have on my own. When I first started practicing piano I did it alone (even though I was an extremely talented child), but once I hit my stride I used to spend several hours a day playing alone, trying out different things, and studying from memory.
What are your musical heroes and why?
In my opinion, there isn’t a musical hero, like Mozart, because he was born in Austria and that can give it a little edge. Or Beethoven, who was born in Germany and who became famous for his works in classical music. Beethoven, for example, is one of the world’s most famous composers. A lot of our music today, like in the pop music and rock music, it doesn’t say it’s a great piece of music – we are talking about a particular piece of music – then we call it popular. But the thing is, no matter where you’re from there’s probably at least one composer in your family with the name Beethoven on his or her mantle. And I’m glad to think that my grandmother knows Beethoven – she is really fond of him. For her he is one of the greats.
I like Mozart and a little bit of Beethoven but I do not love classical music. I do prefer to play piano in concert though. Because it’s easy – and you don’t have to worry about making new friends, it’s more a community type atmosphere which makes it more fun and relaxing.
If you could choose from one type of musical instrument you played, which one would you pick?
I have played guitar all my life, but I didn’t like doing that at that time, I wanted to play with other people. When I got up I realized if I kept playing classical music and studying it, that’s what I’d really do after I retired. So I went back to my childhood, and now I enjoy writing music in the barbershop.
