How do I start a freelance video editor?

Well first you need to have a skill you can use to do your own video editing. This skill can be anything from being a professional sound designer to having a background with video editing software or even learning it from YouTube.

Step 1 – Learn what you can do

The first step is to start your learning process. This could be doing it on a computer or any kind of website you can get an email address, a social media page, a magazine article or even simply from YouTube. You could also do it from a book as I did as a young man trying to learn to edit commercials.

A lot of people have their own personal website or just a blog and this is where they could get help with learning how to edit. You can also find them online through websites such as YouTube or WordPress when people write in and have questions.

I recommend looking around a bit to see what people are up to and trying to learn from them. This is not the ideal way to go to learn anything but it may be effective.

Step 2 – Find someone to teach you

If people have their own website or even just a blog these people could be a good place to start. There really is a forum group for anyone who teaches video editing so if you know anything about video editing there is a lot of people out there who would be willing to teach you.

Step 3 – Learn what you like

If you want to learn how to edit you will also have to find what that video editing tool or system you are interested in. You may want a tool that will do a good job without taking a lot of your time. If you want to learn video editing then look into Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Most of the programs are free and you can buy a bundle with various plugins you will need to edit a video.

A Word on Video Editing Tools – Are they free or have you had to spend money to get them good?

Video editing software also depends on the version you have. A video in your previous version could not edit at least some of the time but now the software can edit at an even higher speed. If you have Windows 7 you would want to make sure you install the latest version. If you have an older version of Windows you need to upgrade. The software is available for Mac OS, Linux, Android and iOS but you might need to pay for those options.
