This is a big debate, and the answers are not so easily agreed upon. With video images, megapixels are the most important thing, but it depends on the target and the intended effect. Most digital cameras of this type are in the 5 megapixel to 16 megapixel range (see the chart below). The most useful camera for any project would be one with 6 megapixels and you’d be limited by your technical ability.
Video cameras typically start at the top end to get that high quality signal.
I don’t own a video or film camera myself, but I’ve always loved photography. I used to be a digital camera nerd and, although now it’s all digital, I’d much rather take pictures with my camera. I know a lot of people who enjoy photography and also like video. So I can’t help but wonder, “What value is there in taking that same image over and over again?” Is a higher pixel count a better way to achieve the same image quality as with films? What’s the point of spending a lot of money to upgrade the sensor if you don’t have a big enough sensor to see the difference? So I wanted to come up with a set of rules.
One rule that I used to measure my cameras and cameras I’m considering buying is: If I know a camera and camera is a 5 megapixel resolution, don’t upgrade until I know the difference between a 6 megapixels camera and a 17 megapixels camera. Also, keep in mind that I will say things like “6 megapixel to 8 megapixels” and not all digital cameras are 6 megapixels… and vice versa. It’s important to think about the value the camera is offering. I’ll explain my thoughts on each of the four models below and then share my thoughts on some of the cameras I have on-hand currently and which ones I expect to buy…
