As far as I’m concerned, every editor I’ve ever been around was a pretty good one.
Can you give me a single reason?
Good quality. (Editors like editors, not the other way around). There are very few editors that work at Google that don’t have a high level of experience. Editors are not always top of the line. There are a handful of those who worked at Microsoft or in different places before they became editors.
What’s your favorite editor?
There is a special place in hell for editors who work for Adobe.
What’s your favorite word processor?
The best editor to work with: WordPerfect
Why should I hire an editor?
The editors I’ve worked with are extremely good at their jobs and it’s one in a million. It’s just something like every other job. The editors you hire should have a very good amount of experience, and have proven themselves through their work on other jobs (maybe they spent 2 or 3 months doing the same stuff as a person, and they were still better).
How do I know the editor I choose is right for me?
As good as an intern or someone on a temp gig sounds right now, and I have to say that it sounds like it might still sound good if you were trying to convince someone right now to get the temp gig.
So what should I care about when it comes to hiring an editor?
Do your research: read books written by editors, as well as blog posts by editors which detail their experiences and philosophies about a job they have. Read interviews the editor had, as well as previous experience, on the job. You could be very disappointed when you’re looking for a job, and you can start there. As for personality, I think it’s just as important. We all know the kind of editors we’d like to work with, but there are many people out there who aren’t as well known or knowledgable.
Where should I get advice/training about editors?
I’m afraid I can’t give advice like this. So I’m going to put it out there on what I learned about editors from my time here.
I have no idea that an editor was writing this on my blog, so here is a blog post that just happened on one of my former employers. I won’t post it here, but you’re about to see it in the blog below.
