LANSING, MI — Michigan Governor Rick Snyder announced Monday a new emergency response fund to meet needs for people in the storm’s path, but it also would not extend to those who have lost their home, including those who have lost their pets.
“We will not be expanding this fund to help families who lost their homes or to any one person,” Snyder told reporters after a Cabinet meeting at the State Capitol. “If you lost your home you’re going to have to take care of that. If you lost your dog, you’re going to need to take care of that and we’re going to do everything we can to help people as they recover.”
Snyder is asking state employees and businesses to donate to the fund to help victims of wildfires and tornadoes in their path and to help with road repairs. He said the money is being donated to the Department of Public Works and the National Guard for the purpose of aiding in recovery efforts, but no personal funds would be utilized for personal care or pets.
Snyder said the $1 million in new funds will help with the recovery of homes and businesses where many have lost their livelihood and the need for water, electricity and phone repair.
