Can you learn violin at any age? – Professor Violin

Yes, a number of well-known violin practitioners have gone their entire lives without ever making an instrument. That’s one of the main reasons why “Bassists Are the Ultimate Professionals” is so great: if you never learned to play the classical style, it becomes very hard to make an instrument.

Some people get through playing guitar, piano, or drums without ever being able to start up a drum kit (and this is true of most students). Some have even gone through playing classical on and off for years without even knowing it to be in a band.

How do you approach learning to play the classical style? There are three parts to playing the classical style: preparation, practice, and learning the technique. Preparation is a combination of reading, watching, listening, and practicing. Practice, in addition, is the process of getting used to the music, reading the score to the correct pitch, and getting the correct timing of playing each note to produce the correct sound. Learning the technique is the part that really counts. Some people start on an instrument the night they can play a note and it takes weeks to build it up and be confident enough to play the next note. Some people learn all the notes of the music first and then use a metronome each day to practice. Or, they could practice, without any metronome at all, until they are very confident that they can play these notes consistently from start to finish. Some people start with just one instrument and slowly build up to playing the classical style with it, gradually learning more and more of the musical language. In a lot of cases, a young beginner may start out playing an upright bass, followed by a bassoon or some violin as the next guitar. Over time, they might eventually learn guitar, piano, etc. In the end, they have gotten the music into their own head.

What types of music are people most interested in learning about? There are a variety of areas that young people typically start with that seem to interest them: music for children, music for school or work, music for special situations, music for children with special needs, and many others. The music that most interests them has little to do with any particular genre or type. For example, a great way for young people to start learning to play music is to start out with some classical music. A great way to learn about the history of violin performance is to start with some pieces that go back more than a century. A great music venue to learn about
