This article discusses the role of the human body in the management of systemic infections, especially those that are transmitted to other people, such as bacterial sepsis. There is growing scientific evidence that there is a relationship between the bacterial population present in the lungs and that of the human immune system. Thus, it is increasingly expected that treatment decisions concerning the bacterial colonizing the lungs will be based on the patient’s clinical need for antibiotic therapy, as well as the fact that the lungs are likely to be the site of a significant level of dissemination of the infection. Such treatment decisions, while they may be necessary to control or minimize morbidity and mortality, may not in any way impact a person’s ability to survive or to function in society.
Bacterial infections are becoming more common in the United States, especially among healthcare personnel [ 1 11 ]. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of hospital-acquired bacterial infections has more than doubled to over 500,000 admissions in 10 years, from about 8,000 per 100,000 population in 1999 before the outbreak, to over 17,000 per 100,000 population in 2010. The incidence rates in healthcare settings have continued to rise for patients from age 0 to 24, as well as for those from age 25 to 54 [ 1 12 ]. These higher rates have led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Center for Healthcare Infection Control and Prevention (CHICC)- to propose the use of antibacterial therapy by primary care physicians to reduce hospitalizations [ 12 ].
This article reviews the evidence that it is important for patients who experience bacterial infections to consider other ways of reducing the incidence of such infections. For example, one of the best ways to decrease the incidence of bacterial infections is to educate healthcare providers in which patients may find the most benefit from having their health monitored, including when and how frequent they should be monitored.
Patients with bacterial sepsis and septic shock represent a serious threat to the health of the community at large [ 1 12 ]. In these patients in the hospital, the pathogenesis of the bacterial infection is complex and involves a multifaceted immune response. However, although the majority of these patients succumb to bacterial seps
