A violin is very much a personal thing. It is a piece of art. It is a beautiful instrument. A violin will definitely make you feel like a virtuoso, because not all people are born with it. It has to be bought at a very young age. It’s about personal satisfaction. In a world of computers — I see a computer as just another piece of technology. It’s something you have to buy.
What about the quality?
The quality is very good, because we’re getting good instruments from fine people. The strings will be fine, because it’s in Italian and it’s a delicate, delicate instrument. It has to sound perfectly smooth when it’s played. It will be a great violin, but I can’t say.
How long will it take to complete?
It depends on each person. You can get a very nice violin in one day of lessons, but it took me 20 days to finish the last piece.
Do you consider yourself an expert violinist?
I don’t say I am. It’s just something that I am learning. I am not an expert, but I will be as professional as possible. I think it’s very important to become an expert from your first day here [in Italy]. I was an amateur since I was 7. So I have experience, but I am learning the instrument, and I hope so.
What is on display at the museum?
We have an exhibition in the museum. All the instruments are on display. This year we’re going to be open till 10 p.m., and we’ll be closing early at 6 a.m. Sunday.
What else do you want from the museum?
If you look at some of the images of the guitar, it really is one instrument. It’s a little difficult to express all of the different instruments. You could probably see the guitar just by looking at it on a wall. In Italy it’s not all that common for families to meet like that, and it’s such a big family that it kind of breaks my heart to see such a nice, big group of people.
