The Washington Wizards were the latest team to be named as one of the finalists for the 2017 Toyota NBA Development League All-Star Game, and the team will return to the Capital One Arena for the event on March 12-14.
The tournament features the best 17 NBA Development League (D-League) teams, all of whom will faceoffs in either a single round, a double-elimination format, or a best-of-three playoff series. With D-League teams and NBA-affiliated teams playing in separate games, the tournament will feature all-NBA players as well as numerous international players from other leagues, including several prospects representing Asia Pacific.
“We were thrilled to welcome several NBA teams to D-League season,” said D-League President Chris Daniels. “With the growth in the D-League, we were eager to expand the number of regional games in order to showcase a range of talented players with a national appeal.”
In the 2017-18 season, teams and players from around the country will compete in a single round, a best-of-five, and a best-of-seven series to determine the eight All-D-League First Year Players. The D-League will have 40 player roster spots for the All-Star Game as a full complement of 30 players is required for the All-Star game.
The Wizards selected 16 participants in the 2017 D-League All-Star Game from 18 teams, and each team will have a second round to compete in. The 2016 D-League All-Star Game featured 15 teams from across the country that competed for three spots to the 2016-17 D-League NBA Draft.
“We’re pleased that the NBA was willing to give us a chance to compete against the best players in the D-League,” said guard John Wall. “This will be a great first step for us to further develop these young players as players for the NBA.”
Led by guard Ramon Sessions, who recently signed a contract extension with the team after the 2017-18 season, the Wizards enter the 2017-18 season with nine returning NBA players on the roster that entered the league as 2016 NBA D-League All-Stars.
