Well, you guessed it, they use the money to make more. When Mike Krzyzewski first got his foot in the door, life coaches made a quarter as much as the average salary for a college basketball player. That was then, says Scott Van Pelt, the founder of Coach of the Year, a website that tracks coaching salaries. Van Pelt says that figure, at the time when Krzyzewski began coaching his Duke teams in 1989, had grown to about $1.4 million and is the equivalent of $5,150 an hour today. Krzyzewski makes $4 million a year.
Most of Krzyzewski’s life coaching income is from his four-year contract as the head coach at Duke. His wife is also a life coach, so they have three children: three boys and a girl, ages 10, 7, and 6. They live in Charlotte, N.C., where Duke is based.
Krzyzewski has lived in the same house since he was 20.
“We are an old family: our father and grandfather lived there,” Van Pelt says. “We never went anywhere else. Never went to any other homes, because we’re so used to it.”
Krzyzewski grew up in Charlotte with his mother, Dorothy. “We’re a big family that’s always been close,” says Krzyzewski. “My grandpa was a great guy and helped us when we were young. My mother was just a big kind-hearted person who was hardworking. … I remember going to her job as the school nurse, and after I got the job, I felt like, ‘There’s no way I’m going back to a nursing school.’ ”
As a student, he worked in the local hospital’s emergency room. After graduation, he moved to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, where he did internal medicine for a few years.
Krzyzewski returned to Chapel Hill and continued working as a physician’s assistant, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. But he noticed something. He knew that women were spending too many hours on the phone with their gynecologists. He also heard over and over that women got the wrong advice, when it came to pregnancy and childbirth.
“People needed to get more information and I’d give it to them,” he says. “That’s how I got into this. I’ve got a lot of
