That, in a nutshell, is the problem, because coaches fail because they believe they have the answer. They often see a problem, they go to their boss and they say, “I need to have a coach, because I’m not getting the results we want.” And usually this comes from a lack of a holistic approach and, unfortunately, there are certain coaches out there who believe because they have all of these answers, they have the answer for everybody who might be struggling against this challenge, “Well, I just need to add another coach who’s got a holistic approach to all of the work involved in coaching, and then I’ll be fine.”
I want to make something clear: There is no problem with coaches working for someone who knows how to improve and teach. In fact, if I’m coaching a young athlete, this guy has been through the same struggle that I have. He’s had his whole athletic career be in the shadow of this goal that he’s always had to get to where he wanted to be.
I could give you an example where it’s not an athlete on my program but instead I’m coaching someone with OCD, and I could give you an example where it’s an athlete on our team who isn’t really learning, so even if we were able to get him to understand the work-at-home model for me, it wouldn’t allow him to get to that place where he was able to teach his son how to play basketball. So if you’re thinking, “Well that’s just a one-on-one coach with a guy who doesn’t have a lot of athletic experience, who doesn’t have the knowledge to get to the next piece of understanding,” you’re fooling yourself.
The truth is we have a bunch of coaches in this world that are very good at teaching people, but they’re bad at helping them grow. We’re giving out one answer, and we’re giving out the wrong answer. They’re doing this under the guise of “I’m trying to help you, but I’m not really going to be able to do it, and we should just hire a full time coach.”
That’s not a good answer. You don’t find this happening in sports in general the way that it does in athletics. There’s always going to be a gap between what’s true and what’s not true.
