The Trump administration has announced it will withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord. It would be a serious blow to the environmental movement that the accord was the culmination of years of advocacy by the Trump administration. There are no good arguments for or against going into another climate agreement. But for an administration that is determined to withdraw, there is a great deal the country could achieve economically by committing to the Paris accord — particularly on low-carbon industries. So what does President Trump’s decision mean?
As it now stands, the U.S. has the second-largest capacity to use low-carbon sources such as natural gas, coal, and nuclear with only China and the United States using more of their total installed capacity. As recently as last year, America was third. The United States is the second biggest exporter of natural gas, after China. It is the third largest supplier of coal, just trailing India and Brazil. And it is the fourth largest producer of nuclear energy with two new reactors slated to be built in the U.S. The Trump administration announced the intention as well.
