The answer is that drawing is an art form that can also easily be used to draw in digital drawings. I think that both forms are useful for both a child’s art and school-work.
One advantage of drawing as opposed to sketching is that it is quicker (for me, maybe more like one second), so you can get a good understanding of your own works and more importantly, the process to create a digital sketch.
As a consequence, a drawing can save lots of time that can be used more effectively for other purposes. Drawing is also good for people who are looking to learn more about drawing, although I don’t think that drawing is for everyone.
Can you say a little about your influences?
I am influenced by a lot of artists from all different genres. I don’t mean that I like looking at only comic art – there’s tons of different styles.
What influences would you say are more common among artists today than what you drew as a child?
Well I don’t think we know enough about these influences. The most common thing in the comic community is probably the use of color in comics.
If I drew today in order to create my drawings, I wouldn’t be able to do that due to the limitations of digital technology. I wouldn’t be able to even afford a printer yet: it would require an enormous investment to purchase a decent one.
This is why I think that comic artists don’t have too many options when it comes to coloring their comics anymore. Colorizing is difficult nowadays since there’s not enough time in the day for it.
We also have a lot of work done on web-comic, and these are just the best in any medium, so it’s natural for it to become a big influence in my work as an illustration artist.
Where do you see the balance between drawing and art as it’s seen today? Do you see a need to step away from drawing and just start painting?
Yeah I do. It should be possible to do both at the same time.
What is your advice for anybody thinking about starting a career as an illustrator or comics artist?
Well there are lots of tips that can make drawing easier and faster, but it’s important to take good care of yourself in order to stay alive and well. It’s not about whether you’re drawing or painting these days: it just needs to be something fun to do.
