Dakka (standard line drawing) with the pencils shown at the left. All of these are my signature drawings.
Dakka, a great way to make art.
Drawing on watercolor paper, one of my favorite pens.
I always use a wet brush to draw, because it gives the image more depth.
It’s a lot of hassle to draw on watercolor paper, and it’s not very forgiving.
On the other hand, when you draw on it, it’s always a pleasure because you get free and endless options to customize it as you like.
I use paper which is thin (for the most part) and it’s fine-grained, and I use it for drawings on watercolor.
For sketches, I use a thicker paper on the right. There’s nothing to say against thinner paper; it just requires more effort when it comes time to color it in.
I do not like to draw on black (for a lot of reasons) and in my opinion, it’s better to be black. If you draw it on it, it will be too obvious.
What are some of your favorite ways to communicate through the art world?
I think communication through art can be really important, because it’s a very important part of what you write.
What I prefer to communicate with a picture is something that has depth, like a book. I know I’ve described the book, but the book doesn’t change very much. You have pictures of it.
For communication through a sketch or drawing, I prefer drawing things from memory, so that I don’t have to do anything extra; I just look into the eyes and see the details.
As I’ve said, I have a lot of experience using watercolor for sketches, because I have a sketchbook.
What are some of your favorite books of your personal collection?
I have an absolute passion for books with a very particular style. The one I keep on my shelf is about the Japanese-American war. I think of it as a very modern, poetic approach to the history of war. It’s very poetic and it’s very interesting to look at it.
What are some tips for beginners?
I keep a lot of notes on my computer and I like to record some of my thoughts or ideas before I start drawing, so that I have some sort of continuity.
