It’s an elaborate and dangerous dance form developed in the U.S. in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It’s also a sport — or dance — which involves people leaping, spinning and doing acrobatic leaps.
“It’s very dangerous,” says Kevin D. O’Hearn, a dance instructor at the National University of Ireland in Galway. “There’s a high risk of injury — it’s a full-contact sport.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are a number of things people shouldn’t do:

Put someone in an unsafe position
Put someone in a position of greater vulnerability
Use your hands for balancing, and make sure you are not twisting someone else’s ankle
Don’t perform moves for your partner
Be quiet and pay attention
Stay within the rules
Do not let anyone touch you, including other people performing the dance
