The National Rifle Association on Wednesday endorsed Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama and urged Alabama voters to “vote for Doug Jones and all the other Republicans running in these special elections to fill seats” left vacant by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“Doug Jones is a man of integrity and an American hero,” Chris Cox, a former Alabama state Supreme Court chief justice, said in a statement.
“There is one thing we know for certain, that while Jeff Sessions may have been our attorney general, his confirmation would have marked the beginning of the end of a great country. It is time for new leadership at the federal level that will end the war on coal, restore security in the southern border, end sanctuary cities, and put veterans first.”
Mr. Jones, who has been endorsed by the Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, also has the backing of National Rifle Association president Wayne LaPierre, who endorsed Mr. Trump.
The NRA endorsed Mr. Trump in May, and is backing Mr. Moore in his bid against Democrat Doug Jones.
NRA, also backing Republican Luther Strange in Alabama’s Republican Senate primary runoff contest, said: “President Trump is right—we need the majority in Congress to fulfill President Trump’s promise to nominate and confirm conservative judges who will uphold the Constitution.
