What is the best spray paint for art?

I’m just going to give you the answer as best as I can: It depends on what you want to get out of the spray paint.

If you want a paint that will easily blend with clothing, like a chamois or poncho, which can be washed out with water and wiped dry on a dry, clean, smooth surface like a towel, that’s what I would suggest. But if you’re painting a big-ass piece of art, like you did in the first link, you’re in for a real treat.

“If you want to get your hands dirty and scratch-building, I’d start off with our popular water-based acrylic lacquer called DuraGlide acrylic paint. It can be diluted to achieve a rich color and to avoid staining. It can also be mixed with a little water to spray it on the artwork using a foam brush or spray bottle.” —Trent Pfeiffer, DuraGlide Art Studio

It can be diluted to achieve a rich color and to avoid staining. It can also be mixed with a little water to spray it on the artwork using a foam brush or spray bottle. “The more layers you add, the better it will go,” says Pfeiffer. After all, there might be just six layers of black on your canvas. “It has a more painterly touch.” Then there’s “water-based” lacquer like Krylon Black Paint. “It has a lot of gloss, but it does have a pretty matte finish,” explained Pfeiffer.

Now if you want some extra coverage for your art, like a deep, deep red, then you’re in for a treat. “A red like Black Paint is great if you want to replicate an area that would be too deep in your canvas; it won’t darken the rest of the piece,” said Pfeiffer. If you want a deeper effect, or want to get a deep, dark color, then opt for Krylon Black Paint or Liquid Black Paint. Then there’s even more options for different shades of dark red.

To go from a matte finish to a more painterly look, you can dilute Krylon Black Paint with a little water or diluted with your favorite dish soap. “
